Pommies Art Print

This print's original form hangs on my blue kitchen wall in a frame I took from the verge of the house at the end of my old alleyway. That house also gave me one of my bookcases: a squat little thing with rounded corners reminiscent of the Art Deco-inspired building it came to reside in. I think the frame had been a gift from a ex-boyfriend, unceremoniously discarded at the end of a lease, because it had a message of love and friendship on its back.

The image itself was perhaps a photo negative of some dandelions (no one could really tell, but I'm sure it meant a lot to its original gifter and giftee), and the posterboard had been cut bizarrely with a notch that always bothered me. Eventually, I painted that posterboard; and in time cut it into a triptych that must be hanging somewhere in my house.

Its current form combines a few things I love about Melbourne suburbs: eucalypts, pomegranate trees, and a stormy cloudy sky streaked with colour; with some art-making practices I use to keep my perfectionism at bay: exposed, asymmetric grid lines, drips of oil paint bleeding into the background, and the background itself being a piece of stretched, textured upholstery fabric covered loosely by leftover paints. Its form was inspired by leaves gathered along the walk home from a Saturday morning pre-season footy training: admiring their rich, vibrant colours and yet knowing they would fade. The original features these leaves themselves rather than painted versions.

I had thought it might make a nice digitised print (you'll note that the leaves are partly taken from the Illyarrie print) but hadn't bothered with it until my Italian mate Ester came to visit and loved it so much that I thought it was time. So thank you Ester ❤️
